The Scientific Committee of the 23rd AETFAT Congress is responsible for the coordination of the Scientific Programme, supporting the AETFAT Secretariat in the selection of symposia, keynote speakers or plenary speakers, in alignment with the theme of the Congress. The group includes professionally active botanists with expertise in taxonomy, conservation, genomics, ethnobotany and biogeography of plants and fungi.
Le Comité scientifique du 23e Congrès de l’AETFAT est chargé de coordonner le programme scientifique et d’aider le Secrétariat de l’AETFAT à sélectionner les symposiums, les conférenciers principaux ou les conférenciers pléniers, en accord avec le thème du Congrès. Le groupe comprend des botanistes professionnels actifs possédant une expertise en taxonomie, conservation, génomique, ethnobotanique et biogéographie des plantes et des champignons.
Alex Asase – Centre for Plant Medicine Research, Ghana
Prof. Alex Asase holds a PhD in Botany from the University of Ghana, and has research interest in plant medicine, ethnobotany and biodiversity science. He is currently the Executive Director of the Centre for Plant Medicine Research in Ghana, and Professor at the Department of Plant and Environment Science, University of Ghana. Prof. Asase has served on various national and international committees and boards. He is currently a board member of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Traditional Medicine Practice Council (TMPC) in Ghana. Prof Asase has published extensively, and he is on the editorial board of several journals.
Prof. Alex Asase est titulaire d’un doctorat en botanique de l’Université du Ghana et s’intéresse à la médecine végétale, à l’ethnobotanique et à la science de la biodiversité. Il est actuellement directeur exécutif du Centre de recherche en médecine végétale au Ghana et professeur au Département des sciences végétales et environnementales de l’Université du Ghana. Le professeur Asase a siégé à divers comités et conseils nationaux et internationaux. Il est actuellement membre du conseil d’administration de la Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) et du Traditional Medicine Practice Council (TMPC) au Ghana. Le professeur Asase a publié de nombreux articles et fait partie du comité de rédaction de plusieurs revues.
Anne Muigai – National Defence University, Kenya
Anne Muigai is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs and Research at the National Defence University-Kenya. She is a Professor of Genetics and the current Chairperson of the African Biogenome Project, a pan-African Project that seeks to characterise 100,000 African species in 10 years. Anne Muigai holds a MSc in plant genetics as well as a PhD in Population Genetics and Molecular Biology from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya.
Anne Muigai est vice-chancelière adjointe chargée des affaires académiques et de la recherche à la National Defence University-Kenya. Elle est professeure de génétique et présidente actuelle du projet African Biogenome, un projet panafricain qui vise à caractériser 100 000 espèces africaines en 10 ans. Anne Muigai est titulaire d’une maîtrise en génétique végétale ainsi que d’un doctorat en génétique des populations et biologie moléculaire de l’université Jomo Kenyatta d’agriculture et de technologie, au Kenya.
Muthama Muasya – University of Cape Town, South Africa
Muthama Muasya is a plant taxonomist and evolutionary biologist at the University of Cape Town. He is a Professor and Keeper of the Bolus Herbarium. His research includes the systematics of the plant family Cyperaceae, and the evolution of the Cape and African Flora. He is on the Southern African Society for Systematic Biology council (SASSB: President, 2021-2023; currently Vice-President), has served on the International Association for Plant Taxonomy council (IAPT, 2017-2023), and a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa.
Muthama Muasya est taxonomiste végétal et biologiste évolutionniste à l’Université du Cap. Il est professeur et conservateur de l’herbier Bolus. Ses recherches portent sur la systématique de la famille des Cyperaceae et sur l’évolution de la flore du Cap et d’Afrique. Il est membre du conseil de la Southern African Society for Systematic Biology (SASSB : président, 2021-2023 ; actuellement vice-président), a siégé au conseil de l’International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT, 2017-2023) et est membre de l’Académie des sciences d’Afrique du Sud.
Mijoro Rakotoarinivo – University of Antanarivo, Madagascar
Mijoro Rakotoarinivo is a botanist, lecturer and the current head of the Department of Plant Biology and Ecology at the Faculty of Science, University of Antananarivo. His research focuses mainly on the palms of Madagascar, in particular their taxonomy, biogeography, utilization forms and conservation. Since 2020, Mijoro has been the chair of the SSC IUCN Madagascar Plant Specialist Group, whose responsibilities involve assessing the risk of extinction of Madagascar’s flora and recommending appropriate conservation measures for sustainable development.
Mijoro Rakotoarinivo est botaniste, enseignant et actuel chef du Département de biologie et d’écologie végétales à la Faculté des sciences de l’Université d’Antananarivo. Ses recherches portent principalement sur les palmiers de Madagascar, en particulier leur taxonomie, leur biogéographie, leurs formes d’utilisation et leur conservation. Depuis 2020, Mijoro est le président du Groupe de spécialistes des plantes de Madagascar de la SSC UICN, dont les responsabilités consistent à évaluer le risque d’extinction de la flore de Madagascar et à recommander des mesures de conservation appropriées pour un développement durable.
Yvette Harvey-Brown – Botanic Gardens Conservation International, UK
Yvette Harvey-Brown is a conservation manager at Botanic Gardens Conservation International a plant conservation NGO based in the UK. For the past five years she has been leading the completion of African tree conservation assessment as a part of the Global Tree Assessment. She is now exploring how conservation assessments can be used to develop well-planned conservation actions. She has led conservation planning projects for threatened trees in Kenya, Ghana and Uganda. At the previous AETFAT conference she coordinated the abstract submission and compiling the conference programme.
Yvette Harvey-Brown est responsable de la conservation au sein de Botanic Gardens Conservation International, une ONG de conservation des plantes basée au Royaume-Uni. Au cours des cinq dernières années, elle a dirigé la réalisation d’une évaluation de la conservation des arbres africains dans le cadre de l’évaluation mondiale des arbres. Elle étudie actuellement comment les évaluations de conservation peuvent être utilisées pour élaborer des actions de conservation bien planifiées. Elle a dirigé des projets de planification de la conservation des arbres menacés au Kenya, au Ghana et en Ouganda. Lors de la précédente conférence de l’AETFAT, elle a coordonné la soumission des résumés et la compilation du programme de la conférence.
Edouard Ilunga wa Ilunga – University of Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo
Edouard Ilunga wa Ilunga is the Head of the Herbarium of Lubumbashi, lecturer of Botany at the University of Lubumbashi, researcher in taxonomy and member of the editorial committee board of Flore d’Afrique Centrale. Contributor to the Flore d’Afrique Centrale, author of Phyllantaceae and currently working on Verbenaceae. Specialist of biodiversity of mining areas in the southeastern DR Congo and facilitator in mining area between mining compagnies, civil society and Government.
Edouard Ilunga wa Ilunga est Responsable de l’Herbier de Lubumbashi, professeur de Botanique à l’Université de Lubumbashi, chercheur en taxonomie et membre du comité éditorial de Flore d’Afrique Centrale. Collaborateur de Flore d’Afrique Centrale, auteur de Phyllantaceae et travaille actuellement sur Verbenaceae. Spécialiste de la biodiversité des zones minières du sud-est de la RD Congo et facilitateur dans le domaine minier entre les sociétés minières, la société civile et le Gouvernement.
Perpetua Ipulet – Makerere University, Uganda
Perpetua IPULET is a Senior Lecturer at Makerere University, has a BSc (Botany/Zoology/Geography), MSc (Envt Sci.), PhD (Microbiology). She has 26 years working as a Botanist / Microbiologist. She started her career as a Research assistant (Botanist), and, coordinated training in Plant conservation and Herbarium Techniques at the East African Herbarium. She has also trained with the Royal Botanic gardens Kew, Institute of Terrestrial Ecology UK, University of Oslo, Aloha Medicinals Inc USA, Institute of edible fungi Shanghai, and the Mycology Laboratories in Belgium. She has 16 publications, supervised graduate theses, special interest is the genus Ficus and polypores.
Perpetua IPULET est maître de conférences à l’université de Makerere, titulaire d’une licence (botanique/zoologie/géographie), d’une maîtrise (sciences de l’environnement) et d’un doctorat (microbiologie). Elle travaille depuis 26 ans comme botaniste/microbiologiste. Elle a débuté sa carrière comme assistante de recherche (botaniste) et a coordonné la formation en conservation des plantes et en techniques d’herbier à l’herbier d’Afrique de l’Est. Elle a également suivi une formation aux jardins botaniques royaux de Kew, à l’Institut d’écologie terrestre du Royaume-Uni, à l’université d’Oslo, à Aloha Medicinals Inc USA, à l’Institut des champignons comestibles de Shanghai et aux laboratoires de mycologie en Belgique. Elle a publié 16 ouvrages et dirigé des thèses de fin d’études, s’intéressant particulièrement au genre Ficus et aux polypores.
Tariq Stévart – Missouri Botanical Garden, USA
Tariq Stévart (Belgian) is Director of the Africa and Madagascar Department of the Missouri Botanical Garden (MBG, USA). He is permanently based at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and at the Meise Botanic Garden in Belgium, but travels extensively in West and Central Africa, and in Madagascar. Stévart is a plant taxonomist by training, focusing his research on the orchid family, while also conducting scientific and conservation projects devoted to the tropical African and Malagasy floras.
Tariq Stévart (Belge) est directeur du département Afrique et Madagascar du Missouri Botanical Garden (MBG, USA). Il est basé en permanence à l’Université Libre de Bruxelles et au Jardin Botanique de Meise en Belgique, mais voyage beaucoup en Afrique de l’Ouest et du Centre, ainsi qu’à Madagascar. Stévart est un taxonomiste végétal de formation, concentrant ses recherches sur la famille des orchidées, tout en menant des projets scientifiques et de conservation consacrés aux flores tropicales africaines et malgaches.
Abubakar Bello – Umaru Musa Yarádua University, Nigeria
Abubakar Bello is a Senior Lecturer at Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina, Nigeria, and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig and the Institute of Biology, Department of Plant Evolution and Molecular Systematics, University of Leipzig, Germany. His research focuses on the taxonomy and systematics of the legume tribe Psoraleeae (Fabaceae). He is currently coordinating a checklist of the vascular plants of Nigeria. In addition to his academic work, he serves as the National Contact Point (NCP) for the Horizon EU Project in Nigeria.
Abubakar Bello est maître de conférences à l’université Umaru Musa Yar’adua de Katsina, au Nigéria, et chercheur postdoctoral au Centre allemand de recherche intégrative sur la biodiversité (iDiv) de Halle-Jena-Leipzig et à l’Institut de biologie, département d’évolution des plantes et de systématique moléculaire, université de Leipzig, en Allemagne. Ses recherches portent sur la taxonomie et la systématique de la tribu des légumineuses Psoraleeae (Fabaceae). Il coordonne actuellement une liste de contrôle des plantes vasculaires du Nigéria. En plus de son travail universitaire, il est le point de contact national (NCP) pour le projet Horizon de l’UE au Nigéria.
Iain Darbyshire – Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, UK
Iain Darbyshire is a botanist and senior research leader at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew with over 20 years’ experience of documenting plant diversity in tropical Africa. He has a specialist interest in the taxonomy and systematics of Acanthaceae and related families in the Lamiales, but also has a wider interest in applying taxonomic knowledge and collections-based science to biodiversity conservation planning in Africa. As such, he co-ordinates the Tropical Important Plant Areas programme at Kew and is currently working in collaboration with partners in Ethiopia, Mozambique and Uganda to document IPAs and advocate for their protection and sustainable management.
Iain Darbyshire est botaniste et responsable de recherche senior aux Jardins botaniques royaux de Kew. Il possède plus de 20 ans d’expérience dans la documentation de la diversité végétale en Afrique tropicale. Il s’intéresse particulièrement à la taxonomie et à la systématique des Acanthaceae et des familles apparentées des Lamiales, mais il s’intéresse également de manière plus large à l’application des connaissances taxonomiques et de la science basée sur les collections à la planification de la conservation de la biodiversité en Afrique. À ce titre, il coordonne le programme des zones importantes pour les plantes tropicales à Kew et travaille actuellement en collaboration avec des partenaires en Éthiopie, au Mozambique et en Ouganda pour documenter les ZIP et plaider en faveur de leur protection et de leur gestion durable.
