Association pour l’Étude Taxonomique de la Flore d’Afrique Tropicale // Association for the Taxonomic Study of the Flora of Tropical Africa

AETFAT [French: Association pour l’Etude Taxonomique de la Flore d’Afrique Tropicale // English: Association for the Taxonomic Study of the Flora of Tropical Africa] is an association of botanists and plant conservationists with an interest in African plants whose members and collaborators come from all over the world. It was established at the Botanical Institute of the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium in 1950, and the first AETFAT Congress was held in the Meise Botanic Garden, Meise, Belgium in 1951. It was intended as a platform for contact among European botanists working on African regional floras in Paris, London, Lisbon, Brussels etc. to report and publish their findings. Thus, historically, AETFAT congresses have been rooted traditionally in taxonomy and systematics of African plants, floristics, and floras for many years. The scope of the Congress has been expanded to include reporting on plant ecology, and the vegetation of Africa. Furthermore, it was agreed that from the 16^th AETFAT Congress held in Belgium in 2000 cryptogamic botany should be included within the general theme of the congress. Since then, mycology has been accepted as part of AETFAT Congresses. It is proposed that phycology, and other emerging and relevant disciplines should be included in the 2025 AETFAT Congress.

Over the last 30 years or so, the interest and participation of African and Madagascan botanists at AETFAT Congresses have increased greatly. AETFAT has now become the meeting place for botanists and conservationists studying the African (including Madagascan) land plants and fungi. AETFAT also addresses the important issues of conservation and sustainable use of plants and fungi, making available the knowledge on African and Madagascan plants and fungi, for policy formulation by governments.

The meetings have been held every 3 years, since 1951. It is the largest conference on African botany, every year with hundreds – sometimes thousands – of participants. The next AETFAT Congress is scheduled to take place in Accra, Ghana, from 3rd-8th August of 2025. It marks the 75th anniversary of the association and it is the first time being held in West Africa.

Elle a été créée à l’Institut botanique de l’Université libre de Bruxelles, en Belgique, en 1950, et le premier congrès de l’AETFAT s’est tenu au Jardin botanique de Meise, en Belgique, en 1951. Il était destiné à servir de plate-forme de contact entre les botanistes européens travaillant sur les flores régionales africaines à Paris, Londres, Lisbonne, Bruxelles, etc. pour rendre compte et publier leurs résultats. Ainsi, historiquement, les congrès de l’AETFAT ont été traditionnellement ancrés dans la taxonomie et la systématique des plantes, de la floristique et des flores africaines pendant de nombreuses années. La portée du congrès a été élargie pour inclure des rapports sur l’écologie végétale et la végétation de l’Afrique. En outre, il a été convenu qu’à partir du 16e congrès de l’AETFAT qui s’est tenu en Belgique en 2000, la botanique cryptogamique devrait être incluse dans le thème général du congrès. Depuis lors, la mycologie a été acceptée dans le cadre des congrès de l’AETFAT. Il est proposé que la phycologie et d’autres disciplines émergentes et pertinentes soient incluses dans le congrès de l’AETFAT de 2025.

Les membres de l’AETFAT se réunissent tous les 3 ans, depuis 1951. CC’est la plus grande conférence sur la botanique africaine, réunissant chaque année des centaines – parfois des milliers – de participants. La prochaine conférence de l’AETFAT aura lieu du 3 au 8 août 2025 à Accra, au Ghana. Elle marque le 75e anniversaire de l’association et se tient pour la première fois en Afrique de l’Ouest.
