About Us

The Association for the Taxonomic Study of the Flora of Tropical Africa (French acronym: AETFAT) is an association of botanists and plant conservationists with an interest in African plants whose members and collaborators come from all over the world.

A series of AETFAT Conferences have been held every three years since 1951. These conferences were held in Europe or the Americas from the first one in 1951 up to the 1978 edition. But from 1981 it was decided that the subsequent AETFAT Conferences should be held in Africa with strong support from the host governments.

The last one was held in Livingstone, Zambia in 2022 after a two-year delay due to CIVID-19. The Livingstone conference was generously supported by the Government of the Republic of Zambia, the University of Zambia, and the JTS Biodiversity. In addition, the Missouri Botanic Gardens, Kew Gardens, and the Botanic Garden Conservation International also supported big delegations of participants to the Livingstone conference.

The forthcoming AETFAT will be held in Ghana in 2025.
